Wednesday, November 7, 2012: 11:15 AM-12:15 PM
Primary Presenter:
Niki Koesel, MSN, ANP, ACHPN
Co-Presenter:
Lana Riemann, MD, MPH
Area of Emphasis: Ethics
Learning Objectives:
1. Recognize the psychological influence of media and its effects on decision making within society
2. Verbalize the current legal, medical and ethical components of the DNR order
3. Operationalize a multi-disciplinary approach to structuring conversation and teaching patients and families about code status and DNR orders
Hospice and palliative care clinicians discuss Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) status on a daily basis with patients and families with an expertise in presenting the benefits and burdens of attempts at Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in the setting of advanced or terminal illness.  However it is becoming more common that patients, families and even healthcare providers are being influenced by the media in their understanding and decision-making related to DNR orders and advance care planning.  Through viewing clips from TV/movies, hearing music and reading excerpts from printed materials, faculty will take a multimedia look at what is influencing society to help participants navigate a media driven world and learn how to better support patients with accurate information related to such an important issue.
