Does Storytelling Help or HInder? Military Experience Revisited

Tuesday, November 6, 2012: 4:15 PM-5:15 PM
Primary Presenter:
Vicki Costa, LCSW, ACHP-SW
Co-Presenter:
John Carmody, MAT
Area of Emphasis: Research (research presentations are solicited for all conference topics)
Learning Objectives:
1. Describe at least three themes based on study findings that surfaced from story telling
2. Identify the impact to which military experience can affect one's spirituality throughout their life
3. Describe the limitations and benefits of incorporating a storytelling intervention into the menu of services offered by hospice
Many veterans have experienced combat or stress-related military assignments and identify military service as one of the major events affecting life’s meaning.  Should hospice professionals ask veterans to open up to explore how military experiences, including duty assignments aligned with war efforts, have affected and shaped their lives and how those experiences may currently be either helping or hindering the healing process?  An 18-month veteran research study was conducted by Delaware Hospice and the University of Delaware.  This session will explore photos and audio recordings of veterans’ stories and examine how “helpful” the storytelling intervention was, the extent to which military experience affected spirituality and themes that surfaced.
