Area of Emphasis: Pediatric Palliative and End-of-Life Care
Learning Objectives:
1. Define “Transdisciplinary” in terms of pediatric palliative care
2. Assess suffering and identify four realms of suffering in pediatric patients
3. Describe potential transdisciplinary interventions to alleviate suffering and identify potential barriers to successful treatment
Assessment of suffering is challenging in pediatrics, particularly for patients who are nonverbal or have special needs.  In this session, one transdisciplinary team offers information and tools for the assessment and management of suffering in the pediatric palliative care population.  Through a team approach, they are able to identify and address suffering in the physical, psychological, social, developmental and spiritual realms.  Comprised of medical, nursing, social work, pastoral care and child life professionals, the care offered together is greater than the sum of the individual skills.
