Because We ARE About Living: Personal Renewal, Team Cohesion and Celebration of Purpose in Hospice Care through Haiku

Tuesday, November 6, 2012: 3:00 PM-4:00 PM
Primary Presenter:
Kevin Henry, MSW, MEd
Area of Emphasis: Interdisciplinary Team
Learning Objectives:
1. Identify structural and affective components of effective haiku
2. Identify and create haiku containing themes/experiences of hospice work
3. Identify four practical ways hospice-related haiku can promote increased professional longevity
Hospice professionals, while fully aware of the privilege of their work, need to cultivate and draw from a multi-dimensional fund of creativity for ongoing renewal. The rich and vital spirit of haiku--brief in form, devoted to present moment awareness, and celebratory of the intimacy in and with which our work happens--serves perfectly. This workshop will demonstrate how these little poems are already in us, waiting to be written and to stun us with a simple elegance and poignancy about the work we do. Friendly methods of haiku writing will be presented and faculty will reveal how self-support can be strengthened, compassion fatigue neutralized, team cohesion promoted and collaborative soul-making encouraged. This session offers both fun and practicality.
