Using the D Word: Opportunities and Obstacles to Discussing Death with Children

Learning Objectives:
1. Discuss the importance of communicating with children about death
2. Sustain a conversation with children who are exploring the subject of death
3. Utilize available resources to enhance communication with children about death and improve the quality of their end-of-life care
This session will explore common concerns regarding communications with children about death. Practical recommendations will be offered for members of the interdisciplinary care team who may need to communicate directly with the seriously ill child about his/her fears, beliefs, values and preferences for end-of-life care. Child friendly language, appropriate therapeutic responses and the creation of opportunities for expression of the child's feelings will also be discussed.
