Primary Presenter:

Pain is the most common distressing symptom in children with advanced malignancies. While most children will respond to conventional management using WHO guidelines, some patients develop refractory pain due to progression of their underlying disease, or rarely as a complication of opioid therapy, a phenomenon known as opioid-induced hyperalgesia. This session will discuss a comprehensive, interdisciplinary approach to care, combining pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic measures for adequate symptom control resulting in improved quality of life for the child and family.

Learning Objectives:
1. Define what constitutes a refractory pain syndrome in children with serious or life-limiting conditions
2. Integrate a structured approach to the evaluation of refractory pain in children
3. Design a treatment plan for pediatric refractory pain inclusive of comprehensive pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic approaches
