Compassion fatigue is part of the daily life of any hospice employee; however, exposure to ongoing stressors as they relate to working in end-of-life care can diminish retention and productivity, decrease staff morale and affect the overall quality of the patient and family experience. This session will define the differences between stress, burnout and compassion fatigue and help you understand statistics related to compassion fatigue and how it relates to the overall staff retention.  Finally, this session will outline general retention methods and provide suggestions for improving morale and resiliency for all hospice disciplines.

Learning Objectives:
1. Distinguish between stress, burnout and compassion fatigue
2. Cite current statistics related to compassion fatigue and how it affects overall staff retention
3. Identify ways to implement programs that provide support in prevention of compassion fatigue and burnout
