Thursday, October 15, 2015: 1:00 PM-2:00 PM
Mustang 2 (Gaylord Texan Resort and Convention Center) - Lone Star Tower - Level 3
Primary Presenter:
Alberto Magana, DMin , VITAS Innovative Hospice Care of Fort Worth, Dallas, TX
Research shows that ethnic minorities access hospice care less often than Caucasians. In part, this issue has been attributed to the lack of cultural competence among hospice staff. This session examines the meaning attached to stories of hope for Hispanic hospice patients and how their belief system about the future has an impact on their anticipatory grief  experience. It also will address how staff can provide culturally sensitive care and explore how hospice providers can present and adapt their services in an integrated manner so that hospice values support the values of other groups.

Learning Objectives:
1. Discuss challenges engaging some patients and families in end-of-life conversations
2. Describe the dynamics of hope at the end of life
3. Identify helpful interventions cultivating hope during a time of loss
