In this session we will review the current applications of safe opioid prescribing practices in hospice and palliative medicine. We will discuss universal precautions in the context of safe and effective prescribing of opioids for pain, and review the assessment and management of risk for abuse, diversion and addiction in people treated for pain. Additionally, we will explore the use of state prescription drug monitoring programs and electronic prescribing as tools to continue safely prescribing opioids for effective palliation of pain.
