Area of Emphasis: Ethics
Learning Objectives:
1. Discuss the central ethical issues involved in AICD deactivation for terminally ill patients
2. Connect the ethical issues in AICD deactivation with the specific role of management and clinical leadership in organizational policy development
3. Develop a policy at their home organization that thoroughly addresses the ethical principles in AICD deactivation
This session, sponsored by the NHPCO Ethics Committee, offers an opportunity for participants to learn and discuss concrete ways to develop and implement an organizational policy for automatic implantable cardioverter-defibrilator (AICD) deactivation in hospice partners that reflects the NHPCO position statement on this issue.  The need for AICD deactivation has increased in the hospice population.  Emphasis will be on the particular role of management and clinical leadership in helping to ensure high-quality best practice that promote and protect the core hospice values of patient autonomy and minimizing preventable pain and suffering.
