Area of Emphasis: Quality Assessment, Performance Improvement, Benchmarking
Learning Objectives:
1. • Participants will be able to discuss the importance of having a clearly-defined patient fall data collection tool and process
2. • Participants will be able to list three ways to improve the collection of patient fall data
3. • Participants will be able to describe a processes by which data can be analyzed in order to identify high risk areas that present opportunities for improvement
Collecting and analyzing data on patient falls is one of the most important activities a provider can conduct, but can also be one of the most frustrating. Missing or incomplete data and an unclear process for analyzing data can leave one wondering if all falls are being documented, and more importantly how much risk is involved. Through case studies, we will explore the development of a rich fall occurrence data collection, analysis, and implementation program that includes: the appropriate selection and use of data elements to capture fall data; methods and techniques for improving the timely collection of data; and processes for the identification of high risk areas through data analysis.
