Hospice Cost Report Reform: Ready or Not?

Friday, March 28, 2014: 2:00 PM-3:00 PM
Potomac D (Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center)
Primary Presenter:
Lisa Lapin
Area of Emphasis: Financial Stewardship and Accountability
Learning Objectives:
1. Describe the importance to CMS, the provider and the hospice industry of accurately completing a Medicare hospice cost report
2. Identify the data elements that are essential to collect in advance of needing to complete and file a Medicare hospice cost report
3. Recognize the changes providers will need to make within their own organizations to track and assemble data to facilitate Medicare hospice cost report completion and filing
While there is currently no monetary settlement based upon the hospice providers’ Medicare cost report, many providers in the hospice industry have failed to recognize the importance of filing an accurate cost report.  Often overlooked is the fact that MedPAC and legislators have focused on the Medicare cost report as one source of data upon which to establish hospice payment reform. Both CMS and ABT Associate confirm that many hospice providers’ cost reports are unusable for analysis due to missing or unusual data.  CMS has worked with MedPac and legislators to assist in the data collection effort needed to develop a reformed hospice payment methodology more closely aligning resource consumption with reimbursement. Now CMS is expanding the scope of data collection with significant revisions to the hospice cost report. This session will be directed at updating hospice managers on Medicare hospice cost report completion requirements.
