Primary Presenter:
Sandy Jones-McClintic, LCSW, ACHP-SW
Co-Presenter:
Dona Reese, PhD, MSW, LCSW
Area of Emphasis: Regulatory Issues
Learning Objectives:
1. Recognize social work values, skills and roles as organizational assets for supporting regulatory compliance in hospice agencies
2. Decrease systemic and role barriers which impede the full utilization of social workers in regulatory compliance
3. Engage in the development of strategies for utilizing social workers to promote regulatory compliance
As a result of heightened regulatory scrutiny and severe penalties for programs that are identified as engaging in “fraud and abuse,” hospice programs are becoming increasingly proactive in recognizing their compliance risks and quickly making internal changes to address them.  This presentation will highlight the importance of engaging social workers as critical resources in regulatory compliance, looking especially at social work strengths and skills as key tools for building stronger, more regulatory-knowledgeable and proactive interdisciplinary teams.  It will address the use of General In-Patient level of care (GIP) in hospice inpatient units as one example of an area where social workers have a significant role to play in improving compliance and it will offer strategies for effectively engaging and utilizing social workers to increase regulatory compliance throughout hospice agencies.
