Managing Conflict: A Practical Approach

Thursday, April 7, 2011: 1:30 PM-3:00 PM
Primary Presenter:
Claire B. Tehan, MA
Area of Emphasis: Team Management and Leadership
Learning Objectives:
1. Identify destructive and constructive behavioral responses to conflict
2. Describe the role of "hot buttons" in provoking destructive responses to conflict
3. Identify behaviors that demonstrate effective and beneficial responses to conflict
Conflict is inevitable; it results from the fact that people have different (and sometimes opposing) goals, needs, desires, responsibilities, perceptions and ideas. Conflict that focuses on ideas, rather than on personalities and shortcomings, can result in creativity, productivity, teamwork and improved group relations. Conflict that focuses on people can escalate rapidly, unpleasantly and have detrimental and far-reaching effects. This session will demonstrate that ineffective and harmful responses to conflict can be avoided, and effective and beneficial responses can be learned.
