1. Describe the use of ARNPs in hospice and palliative care programs
2. Identify the potential challenges and benefits of utilizing ARNPs
3. Describe outcome measures to monitor the effectiveness of utilizing ARNPs

The Medicare Modernization Act allows nurse practitioners (ARNPs) to bill for hospice visits under certain circumstances. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) data reveal few hospices utilize ARNP services. Cost-effective means of increasing medical staff hospice visits are needed with CMS face-to-face requirements and proposed hospice revenue decreases. This presentation will describe the successful experiences of two large hospice agencies that utilize ARNP services more than physician services and discuss job responsibilities, billing regulations and challenges and benefits of employing hospice and palliative care ARNPs.
