Thursday, March 29, 2012: 9:45 AM-11:15 AM
Chesapeake 7-9 (Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center)
Primary Presenter:
David Casarett, MD, MA
Co-presenters:
Joan Teno, MD, MS and Carol Spence, PhD
Area of Emphasis: Quality Assessment, Performance Improvement, Benchmarking
Learning Objectives:
1. Describe at least 5 commonly accepted safety standards from other health care settings
2. Explain why these safety standards are not applicable to hospice care
3. Identify ways in which safety standards could be modified to better fit the characteristics of the hospice population and the goals of hospice care
Patient safety is one of the anchors of high quality medical care, and safety standards have been developing quickly for acute care, home care and nursing home settings.  However, three unique aspects of hospice care-patient preferences for comfort care, a seriously ill population and shared responsibility for caregiving - make it very difficult to apply existing safety standards to hospice.  This workshop will explore the unique challenges of developing a culture of safety in a hospice setting and will offer three key principles to guide safe hospice care.
