Thursday, March 29, 2012: 2:15 PM-3:15 PM
Potomac C (Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center)
Primary Presenter:
Joy Barry, RN, MEd, LNC
Area of Emphasis: Regulatory Issues
Learning Objectives:
1. Describe the impact of payment-related scrutiny when clinicians make inaccurate related/unrelated determinations
2. Discuss the diagnosis and clinical factors that should be considered when making individualized, patient-specific related/unrelated determinations
3. List three challenges commonly experienced by hospice clinicians when making related/unrelated medication determinations
Making decisions regarding which components of care are related to the terminal illness is an important element of care planning and is critical to ensuring appropriate billing. The hospice industry is experiencing increasing payment-related scrutiny focused on ensuring that Medicare is not billed separately for care and services that are related to a patient’s terminal illness and its related conditions. Through a case-based approach and interactive audience polling, this presentation will provide information and tools, including decision trees, policies, and documentation samples to enable hospice clinicians to establish best practices in their organizations.
