Potomac 1-2 (Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center)
Primary Presenter:
Patrick Smith, MDiv, MA, PhD(c)
Co-presenters:
Jennifer Ballentine, MA and Timothy Kirk, PhD
Area of Emphasis: Ethics
Learning Objectives:
1. Define what an ethics committee is and ways it can function in a hospice setting
2. Describe the socio-cultural shifts that highlight the central role of ethics in hospice care
3. Identify some of the pitfalls common in developing an ethics committee in a hospice context
A well-educated, well-organized, fully functioning and integrated ethics committee can assist hospices in navigating the ethically difficult terrain that is often a part of hospice care. While some organizations may think investment in ethics resources is a luxury they cannot afford, this session argues that developing and fostering an active ethics program should instead be seen as a necessity to ensure that hospice staff and the communities they serve have access to resources that support patients, families and employees in making ethically sound decisions.  This session will highlight the importance of developing and sustaining ethics committees in hospice organizations. It will provide suggestions to help establish new ethics committees and help existing ones grow and thrive.
