Potomac C (Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center)
Primary Presenter:
Heather Wilson, Ph.D.
Co-Presenter:
Howard Young, J.D.
Area of Emphasis: Regulatory Issues
Learning Objectives:
1. Name three risk areas related to hospice in nursing facilities identified by the OIG
2. Describe the Medicare coverage requirements that were not met in 82% of the claims reviewed in the OIG's 2009 study
3. Define a "high-percentage hospice"
Since 1995, the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) has been concerned about the potential for fraud when hospices provide care in nursing facilities.  In 1999, the OIG identified risk areas related to hospice in nursing facilities that continue to be a focus of fraud investigations today. This presentation provides a review of these risk areas and considers the future of hospice in nursing facilities in light of more recent OIG investigations that identifiy "high-percentage" hospices and recommend more intense scrutiny and payment reform.
