Area of Emphasis: Organizational Excellence
Learning Objectives:
1. Understand the negative impact current business models may be having on hospice care
2. Describe twelve core competencies for reclaiming the heart of hospice
3. Design organizational structures that will assist in reclaiming the heart of hospice
Hospices are struggling to survive in an incresingly challenging environment of regulatory scrutiny, demands for compliance, and financial constraints. Unfortunately, the adoption of organizational survival modes may have a negative impact on the unique characteristics which are the hallmark of hospice care.

Returning to the original principles upon which hospice care was founded, the presenters will describe the core competencies required to reclaim the heart of hospice; competencies based on long forgotten research attenuated by 50 + years of collective hospice nursing practice. Participants will use tools and processes to measure outcomes as hospice team members gain mastery of the competencies along with guidelines for the establishment of organizational culture and structures designed to foster, honor and celebrate and reclaim the heart of hospice.
